CBN Launches New BVN Platform: Uncertainty Surrounds Processing Fees for Nigerians

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), in collaboration with the Nigerian Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), has announced the launch of a new Bank Verification Number (BVN) platform, primarily aimed at facilitating BVN registration for Nigerians living abroad. The new platform, set to go live in December 2024, is designed to enable diaspora Nigerians to complete their Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements and manage their local bank accounts remotely without the need for physical biometric verification.

The development of this digital platform addresses long-standing challenges faced by Nigerians in the diaspora who have previously depended on third-party service providers for BVN enrollment. These providers typically charge a fee of about \$45 for the registration process. The new system is expected to streamline access and potentially lower costs, though specific details regarding any processing fees have not yet been officially released by the CBN or NIBSS.

In Nigeria, BVN enrollment has traditionally…

Emir Bayero Cancels Sallah Durbar Amid Kano Monarchy Dispute

The annual Sallah Durbar in Kano, a grand cultural event traditionally celebrated with horse parades, communal gatherings, and a display of the rich heritage of the region, was notably absent during the recent Eid-el-Kabir celebrations. This year’s cancellation of the Sallah Durbar has sparked significant attention, particularly in light of the ongoing dispute surrounding the leadership of the Kano Emirate. The dispute stems from political and legal conflicts involving the dethronement and reinstatement of key figures within the monarchy, including the prominent Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero.

The Kano Emirate's leadership has been a source of tension for several months. In May 2024, the Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, passed the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law, which effectively dissolved the existing emirates and led to the dethronement of Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, the 15th Emir of Kano. This move opened the door for the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as…
